JDP provides a sustainable future for new Aberdeen primary schoolThe pupils and staff of the New Brimmond Primary School, will soon benefit from an impressive educational facility, delivered under the hub Initiative, between Aberdeen City Council (ACC) and development partner hub North Scotland who appointed Ogilvie Construction to construct the school with a project value of £11.9 million.

Specialist water management company JDP was invited by leading civil engineering contractor David Smith Contractors to advise on the best solution for a large attenuation tank 32 m (L) x 4 m (W) x 0.5 m (D) to minimise the risk to localised flooding and provide an effective method of storm water retention.

In close collaboration with the contractors,JDP’s technical design department provided specialist advice including a design offering the best solution, and providing soak away calculations to help prevent flooding. The JDP proposal was to use an efficient, purpose designed complete system incorporating GRAF Eco Bloc lightweight modular attenuation crates, geotextile membrane and fleece for the tank. The Eco Bloc system allows two crate modules to be stacked one inside the other, halving transport costs and CO2 emissions. The system is designed to have a high rate of infiltration and barrier free inspection.

For this particular project, thesystemspecification delivered significantbenefits on site. The crates are lightweight, and offer real benefits in terms of reduced time on site, speed of installation and in reducing transport costs, material costs and reduced maintenance costs when compared with traditional alternatives such as conventional drainage channels.

Peter Carson Contracts Manager at David Smith Contractors was impressed with the service and advice offered by JDP and commented: “ We are delighted with the expert advice, designs and solutions delivered by JDP which has ensured we provided the most effective sustainable system for the site, from a single source, within the required timeframe and budget.”

The successfully completed tank is first of three tanks to be completed on the site.

Through its dedicated technical design department JDP provides expert design, advice and support for all projects involving Surface Water & Foul Water Management systems and to ensure architects, specifiers and contractors can maximise operational efficiency and effectiveness, comply with legislation and provide a solution which meets the site requirements. The technical design department uses the latest technology in hydraulic modelling to design these systems and produce drawings for the client, which enables them to realise their project goals.Getting it right at the design stage can not only lead to significant savings on installation, but also prevent failure and the additional costs associated with putting it right at a later date.
