Brean Leisure Park in Somerset is a leading holiday destination and days’ out attraction that has recently installed a 400kW biomass boiler system to heat their indoor swimming pool complex.
Director Alan House says: ‘Running costs are a key consideration when planning new projects and biomass seemed like an obvious thing to consider. It ticks all the boxes in terms of boosting our green tourism rating, but also running costs with the Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) payment scheme.’
Alan and his team decided to investigate renewable energy following a recommendation from a holiday park in Cornwall that switched to biomass with Fair Energy in 2013.
From the outset Alan was impressed with the company and what was presented in terms of the design and project costs. Building works were already underway when the decision to switch to biomass was made, and Brean worked closely with Fair Energy to create a design that would fit in with the developing architecture.
Fair Energy came up with a unique set of plans, with the wood pellet fuel store situated above the boiler room. ‘Building the fuel store on the first floor has saved us a lot of space,’ says Alan.
‘The overall design was quite a complex blueprint,’ he adds, ‘mainly because of the need to integrate the new biomass boiler system with our existing swimming pool plant equipment. We need to generate a consistent amount of heat to run the pool and play room and Fair Energy advised us that two 200kW boilers would satisfy the demand for heat.’
Alan commends Fair Energy for their professional installation skills, saying: ‘We now have a boiler system and plant room that looks immaculate and we’re very pleased with it. And with the RHI green heat scheme that will pay us a subsidy for 20 years, we can significantly reduce our running costs.’
