Hanson Formpave puts the "extra" into Tesco Extra
Hanson Formpave, a leading UK manufacturer of specialist concrete paving products has recently completed a 761 capacity shoppers’ car park for grocery giant, Tesco, at its all-new 80,000 sq ft superstore in Risca, South Wales. This follows the company’s successful, long-standing design and supply of both standard and permeable paving schemes, for more than 30 Tesco retail developments across the UK and Ireland.
Appointed by project consulting engineers, Pinnacle, as both paving scheme designer and supplier, Hanson Formpave supplied over 10,000m2 of its patented Aquaflow paving system and nearly 3,000 l/m of Forest Edging, both in Red Brindle, achieving both a practical and aesthetic car parking facility for the new store in Risca. As a preferred supplier for Tesco, Pinnacle has successfully partnered with Hanson Formpave on a number of schemes, working together on stores across England and Wales.
Flood and surface water issues were a priority for the project team as the new superstore sits alongside the River Ebbw. Due to restrictions on outflow from the site, both the Environment Agency and Local Authority were involved, every step of the way, providing advice and direction to help ensure that the project met both the environmental and social demands of the planning permission process. One of which was satisfying the Environment Agency Wales that a drainage solution be provided which was both sustainable and improved water quality.
In addition to the construction of flood defence walling by specialist main contractors, Britannia Construction Ltd, the Hanson Formpave Design Service team designed a solution using its market-leading permeable paving SUDS system, Aquaflow, to clean the water to a pH neutral standard and eliminate the issue of surface water. Using a sub-base and geotextile layering structure, the tanked system attenuates the water before releasing it back into the watercourse, up to five hours after the peak of the down pour or storm.
Groundworks and paving specialist, D20 installed and laid the Hanson Formpave warranted permeable paving SUDS system in each of the car parking bays, creating an attenuation zone across the entire car park.
The new multi-million-pound Tesco Extra store forms part of an ambitious regeneration plan for Risca, improving job opportunities and community facilities, whilst also providing a welcome facelift for the Welsh town. The build follows the purchase of a former Foundry site, off Newport Road, by the supermarket chain.
