Environmental business scoops two awards

Monday, 24 November 2008

A new free service for the construction industry has this week been presented with prestigious Green Apple Award for Environmental Best Practice. The awards are organised by The Green Organisation and each year they celebrate the achievements of those companies, both in the UK and abroad, whom they feel have contributed to helping the environment in some way.

BuilderScrap is a brand new website for the construction industry which allows users to upload any surplus, unused materials or good quality, second hand goods to the website, completely free of charge. Other users can then search for and buy these goods. The construction industry reportedly sends 90 million tonnes of waste to landfill each year, of which around 14% is virgin, unused material. BuilderScrap aims to get the industry working together to lower these shocking statistics. They also aim to help those within the industry to understand their legal, moral and social obligations to the environment by providing various, up to date resources to download free of charge.

As well as the prestigious Green Apple Award, which was presented in the House of Commons on Monday, BuilderScrap won the Best Eco IT Product in the iTSHOWCASE Awards, and was shortlisted in the Best New Eco IT Product Award, both of which were presented at the Interbuild exhibition in the Birmingham NEC last month.

The business has been fully operational for less than one month, but these awards suggest a very promising future for the website.

Mr Les Owens, Managing Director of BuilderScrap, says that he is "immensely proud of all the work that has gone into making the project a reality. The early recognition by such prestigious organisations has given the whole team a real boost. As a builder myself, I understand the time and financial constraints waste management can have on a project which is why we have designed the site to be completely builder-friendly.

The use of MMS technology allows users to upload products directly from the building site and the website has been made easy to use in any size of business."

A division of established construction company, BuilderScrap is based on the Greenfields Technology Park in Bromborough. It is now live, currently being launched nationwide and is completely free to register and use.
