Royal Shakespeare Company selects Knauf Insulation
When the Royal Shakespeare Company wanted to update its complex roofing system at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre, Stratford- upon- Avon, there was only one insulation provider for the job. By utilising its unique 3D calculation service Knauf Insulation was able to meet the stringent demands of the theatre’s large domed roof.
Built in 1932, the home of the Royal Shakespeare Company is undergoing a comprehensive transformation and it was essential that it retained its original Art Deco and Victorian elements, blending the key aspects of the existing buildings with the new theatre designs.
Specialist roofing contractor Varla (UK) Limited, was tasked with designing, manufacturing and installing a Zinc Standing Seam Roof and Wall system. Having worked together on previous successful projects, Varla (UK) Limited challenged Knauf Insulation to propose a purpose built solution to meet the demanding and specific needs for the unique project.
A key driver which led to the specification of Knauf Insulation over any other supplier was its ability to provide unique 3D calculation support from its Technical Advisory Centre. The support service can calculate two and three dimensional heat flows through construction elements, allowing exact insulation thickness and U-value requirements to be determined. The service concluded that Knauf Insulation could meet all Varla’s requirements by supplying its FactoryClad 32 roll.
Designed specifically for metal clad roofs, FactoryClad 32 was installed to provide superior thermal and acoustic insulation. The highly resistant, non combustible glass mineral wool was ideal for specification where fire safety is paramount.

The Royal Shakespeare Theatre transformation project is due for completion in late 2010.
