New hospitals benefit from zero waste waterproofing system

Thursday, 1 April 2010

The state-of-the-art new hospital in Wakefield is one of three hospitals benefitting from a PermaTEC EcoWrap hot melt system, installed by national building envelope contractor, Prater. PermaTEC EcoWrap, developed by IKO PLC, is the world’s most advanced and innovative hot melt waterproofing system, delivering a range of environmental benefits and market leading performance.

In total over 15,000m2 of the material has been used on roof areas at the Wakefield site. PermaTEC EcoWrap features new wrapper technology which blends into the material when heated, removing the need for heavyweight cardboard packaging and eliminating site waste. The product requires lower application temperatures on site which speeds up installation and uses less energy. It is also manufactured in the UK, with a dramatically lower carbon footprint than imported systems.

Following the successful installation at Wakefield, Prater proposed the use of over 16,000m2 of PermaTEC EcoWrap hot melt at two further hospitals in Walsall and Caerphilly. It is also being used on numerous other prestigious projects, including the Olympic Games Stadium, Stratford City Shopping Centre and several Building Schools for the Future schemes.
