Knauf Insulation aids U Value achievement for replacement hospital

Monday, 18 January 2010

Knauf Insulation has worked closely with Laing O’Rourke and Sheffield Insulations on the specification of over 210,000 square metres of insulation to achieve the required U Values for an NHS Foundation Trust Hospital in Middlesbrough. Knauf Insulation was approached to solve some initial difficulties the project faced in achieving the desired thermal performance for the timber framed building.

Knauf Insulation Crown FrameTherm Roll 40 and Rocksilk Universal Slab were specified for Roseberry Park, a 312 bed single storey timber frame Mental Health Facility designed to replace the existing St Luke’s Hospital in Middlesbrough.

Specifically manufactured for application in external walls in timber frame construction, FrameTherm Roll demonstrates exceptional thermal conductivity ranging from 0.032 to 0.043 W / mK. FrameTherm also offers outstanding sound absorption characteristics, an important consideration during the specification process in order to create the best possible environment for both staff and patients at Roseberry Park.

FrameTherm Roll is lightweight, easy to install and is sized to fit tightly between standard stud widths without any cutting. FrameTherm Roll is manufactured from glass mineral wool, an inherently sustainable insulation which is rot proof, and odourless. Its environmental capabilities are bolstered by the high content of recycled glass bottles used in the manufacture of the insulation.

Specified throughout the internal walls of the hospital, Rocksilk Universal Slab was chosen primarily for its inherent acoustic properties. In addition, the product boasts superior fire performance which is ideal for limiting the spread of fire -since it holds a Euroclass classification A1 to BS EN ISO 13501-1 for non-combustibility. Nor will it give off toxic smoke or suddenly ignite in a fire due to ‘flashover’.

In addition to this, Rocksilk Universal Slab was manufactured with the new ECOSE Technology, resulting in a highly sustainable insulation product. The revolutionary binder reduces the product’s embodied energy by up to 70 per cent and delivers a superior level of sustainable insulation.

Stephen Mann, Project Manager at Sheffield Insulations’ Newcastle branch, comments: “With a growing amount of timber frame construction being developed, it is reassuring to note that Knauf Insulation has the capabilities to meet the requirements for this modern method of construction. Once again our confidence in Knauf Insulation’s products has been demonstrated through the project at Roseberry Park, confirming it as an ideal element in our supply chain partnership.”
