Sarnafil shows its PPP credentials at Scottish Community Campus
There can be no better demonstration of Sarnafil’s commitment to meeting the demands of the government’s Public Private Partnership (PPP) programme than its contribution to the Raploch Community Campus project.
Providing a shared space for education, sports and community facilities, this £17million PPP project is at the heart of a £120million urban regeneration plan for the Raploch area of Stirling in Scotland. And with the campus home to a total of seven schools, one of client Stirling Council’s key requirements was that the newly constructed site be an exemplar of design as part of its wider Stirling Schools PPP programme.
Sarnafil’s single ply roofing system was selected for the campus’ 2,000sq m roof thanks, in part, to the company’s proven ability to assist in the design, procurement, installation and facilities management phases of a PPP project such as this.
Raploch’s main roof was fitted with mechanically fastened Sarnafil membrane in S327-12EL Light Grey while the remaining canopy roof area was fitted with Sarnafil G410-12EL, also in Light Grey. A new-build site spanning over 11,000sqm, roofing contractor Allan Thomson of WG Walker says that the speed and ease of installing the Sarnafil system helped him and his team meet the project’s tight deadlines.
“Timescale was the main challenge of this job,” says Allan. “Several follow-on trades needed access after us to install services such as rooflights, sunlights and ducting, so it was vital we finish on schedule. The installation of the flat Sarnafil roof was relatively fast and straightforward, which certainly helped us to interface with these additional trades and in turn facilitated the successful completion of the project as a whole.”
Stephen Braid, Sarnafil’s sales manager for Scotland, says that Raploch Community Campus is a shining example of a PPP project, which sees privatesector finance and management expertise used to procure projects that traditionally would have been financed and operated by the public sector.
As Stephen explains: “By requiring the private sector to put its own capital at risk in order to deliver high-quality public services that can be sustained in the longterm, one of the defining requirements of all PPP projects is to meet tight timescales and achieve low running costs with as few surprises as possible.”
As well as the speed and flexibility of the system’s installation aiding the campus’ timely completion, Stephen says that Sarnafil successfully met these remaining PPP criteria: “Our system’s strong environmental performance will benefit Raploch’s whole-life running costs while a 10-year guarantee will further secure the council’s investment – proof positive that both Sarnafil’s product and service are the ideal choice in achieving the requirements of PPP projects.”
