ECOSHOWCASE
There is a shared recognition that the industry needs to change the way we design and build.
Every stage of the building process has an impact on the environment - materials, transportation, construction and waste.
And what an impact that can be from an industry whose output is worth over £100 billion a year, that accounts for 8% of Gross Domestic Product and provides employment for around 3 million workers.
Based on official BERR government statistics, building is responsible for nearly half of UK carbon emissions, half of water consumption, one third of landfill waste and 13% of all raw materials used in the UK economy.
The launch of the joint industry and government "Strategy for Sustainable Construction" in June 2008 comes at a difficult time for the industry, with tales of doom and gloom hanging over the house building sector in particular.
But, when the going gets tough, the tough get going! No one is about to ignore the key message in construction today which will remain long after the current pessimism is a spent force: We must dramatically reduce the environmental impact of buildings and infrastructure construction.
Are we doing it to meet government declared environmental targets? Well of course. But let's not forget the business case of delivering sustainability and prosperity for the sector and the broader economy.
ecoSHOWCASE will aim to showcase many key areas of energy efficiency & sustainable development, such as materials, lighting, day lighting, water, waste, heating and ventilation.
ecoSHOWCASE will present the best in eco-friendly building, process and design tools, as well as product stewardship and environmental assessment methodologies.
ecoSHOWCASE will attempt to educate visitors with the latest actionable sustainable construction guidelines from the leading organisations and associations.
